The Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as the African Nations Cup (ANC), is the main international football competition in Africa. It is sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and was first held in 1957 in Sudan. Since 1968, it has been held every two years. In 1957 there were only three participating nations: Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia. South Africa was to compete, but was disqualified due to the apartheid policies of the then government. Since then, the tournament has grown, necessitating qualifying rounds. The number of participants in the final tournament reached 16 in 1998 (16 teams were to compete in 1996 but Nigeria withdrew, reducing the field to 15) and since then, the format has been unchanged, with the sixteen teams being drawn into four groups of four teams each, with the top two teams of each group advancing to a "knock-out" stage.Egypt is the most successful nation in the Cup's history, winning the tournament a record six times. Ghana and Cameroon each won four titles.
The tournament is currently underway in Angola with one major blemish: the attack on the Togo team bus. Three people lost their lives.
The tournament has however seen minor blunders with the goalkeepers committing suicidal mistakes and leaking in goals. On the team front, the Ghanaian team are major losers with the loss of their star player Michael Essien due to a knee injury and Mali with their quality side not advancing to the next round. Who can confidently tell who the winners of the 2010 African Cup of Nations will be? I want to meet that person!
The question we also need to ask ourselves is, are the so-called superpowers of African football, really superpowers? Bar Egypt, the Super Eagles of Nigeria last won the Cup in 1994; Ivory Coast last won the Cup in 1992 and Ghana in 1982. Is there something called superpowers in football? On the world stage, bar Brazil, Germany last won the World Cup in 1990, England in 1966 with Portugal and Spain having never won the tournament. These are supposedly superpowers of the footballing world!
Who will be winners of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™? Can Bafana Bafana go all the way? We think anything is possible.
