Melissa Sutherland
Wine Tourism Promoter
Global Citizen, passionate Capetonian, mompreneur, wine tourism promoter, freelance writer, Melissa is grateful that she lives in what explorer Sir Francis Drake described as ‘The Fairest Cape in the circumference of the World’.

What is the best thing about living in Cape Town?
Cape Town is very cosmopolitan and I am a Global Citizen at heart having lived and worked for over a decade in New York and Sydney as well as being conversant in French and German. I had the privilege of serving as a South African diplomat in the early days of our democracy. Apart from its breathtaking beauty, I love the fact that twenty minutes from the cosmopolitan hustle and bustle of Cape Town you can be in the rural and historic winelands of Constantia. The best thing about Cape Town is how close one is to nature. From a hike in the Mountain to sundowners on the beach you can experience a mini-holiday every day.

What sparked your interest in wine and the Cape Winelands?
Wine transcends barriers. I love connecting people and being able to meet in a common language. I have an international perspective and wine is an international product. It embodies the culture, people, and heritage of its origin. I recognize the top quality of our service offerings. In the Cape Winelands you get the whole package – quality wines, historic buildings, passionate winemakers, excellent restaurants. I love the fact that the wines of the Cape and Constantia in particular were served in the court of Napoleon and immortalized in the writings of Jane Austen.

What do you think hosting the World Cup mean for South Africa?
All South Africans have an opportunity to showcase what is so special and unique about our country. The diversity of our people, the beauty of our natural resources, the energy and boundless opportunities to make a difference. The visitors who come and have a great experience will be our best Ambassadors as there is no better marketing tool than a word of mouth reference from a trusted source. We have a quality product and I want people to know about it.

What other interests do you have?
Apart from eating out at the fantastic restaurants in the Cape, my husband and I love dancing the Argentinean Tango with Norwegian friends at the Albert Hall in Woodstock owned by a Parisian antique collector!
