Gerald Hoberman
Renowned master photographer, author and publisher
Cape Town born and bred, Gerald Hoberman’s illustrious career has taken him to the four corners of the globe, but his passion for the sheer magnificence of Cape Town’s natural scenic beauty has never diminished. Each time he flies home to the Mother City, the sight of Table Mountain invokes in him an elated twinge of nostalgia. His stunning photographic books, postcards and other products featuring Cape Town, South Africa, wildlife of Africa and, currently, the definitive work Lighthouses of South Africa do much to broadcast the unique attributes of the city and the country as a whole. In the words of Cape Town Routes Unlimited’s chief executive Calvyn Gilfellan, ‘there are literally no words to describe what a Hoberman photograph does for destination marketing’. ‘The Hobermans (Gerald and his son Marc) are captivating tourists who visit and keep coming back to Cape Town and the rest of South Africa,’ he says.

How did it all start?
As an independent, adventurous young boy living in Oranjezicht in the shadow of Table Mountain, I would climb as far as the lower cableway station with my friends on imagination-fuelled adventures. At the age of 8 years, I borrowed my sister’s Kodak Baby Brownie camera and never gave it back. Photography was to become the catalyst for a very varied life, with enough experiences to fill the thick book that I am often encouraged to write.

What makes Cape Town and South Africa so special to you?
The unrivalled natural beauty of Table Mountain, Devils Peak, Lions Head and Signal Hill and The Twelve Apostles, the pristine, sun-drenched sandy beaches, the Mediterranean climate with a variety of microclimates within a short drive. Then there are the rich flora and fauna from Cape Point Nature Reserve to the majestic Cape Winelands, the oldest vineyards in the ‘New World’. The Cape has a rich cultural heritage and ethnic diversity. The quality and friendliness of its citizens endear them to all who experience their hospitality. Added to all this, whale watching, great white shark cage-diving, an African penguin colony, deep-sea game fishing, mountain climbing, windsurfing, paragliding and other extreme sports are but a few of the activities on offer. Cape Town boasts the finest restaurants and hotels (and nearby game lodges), and arguably has the most aesthetically pleasing, curvaceous soccer stadium in the grandest of settings.

How would you describe yourself?
Essentially, I’m a visual communicator, ever passionate about my photography and publishing, and I enjoy writing too. An uncompromising perfectionist, I am also an adventurer, a romantic, a family man and a proud grandfather.

Favorite saying?
Everything is negotiable except quality! Whatever it takes (to get the perfect photograph)!

What do you see happening in the community?
My own personal observations of little everyday interactions in the Cape’s diverse ethnic and cultural kaleidoscope confirm goodwill at the grass roots level, which augurs well for the future.

Who would you like to see win the FIFA World Cup?
I would like to see the whole of South Africa win as a nation. I am confident that the indelible South African experience of 2010 will make us the premier travel and conference destination of choice.
